If you've used medicinal hemp oil before going to a bar, you probably want to know if it's safe to mix CBD oil and alcohol. Drinking an alcoholic beverage can interfere with various types of medication, which is why you need to be cautious with CBD hemp oil and especially with marijuana.

If you wish to understand the potential interactions, you need to know how cannabidiol works, and how alcohol works within the body. A lot of experts believe that these substances are able to suppress or augment each other's effects. In this article, we will take a look at both and try to determine whether you can use CBD oil and alcohol at the same time. Read on!

Can you mix CBD oil and alcohol?

Unfortunately, alcohol abuse has become more common nowadays. This is why alcohol dependence has become a major issue, even among young people. One drink will not cause a problem, but drinking a few beers several times a week can lead to major mental and physiological issues. In the most severe cases, excessive alcohol consumption may lead to high liver toxicity, permanent damage, and even death.

Alcohol works as a depressant. While it has numerous beneficial substances and a lot of sugar, it doesn't raise your energy levels. Instead, as you continue drinking alcohol, the symptoms will get worse and worse. This substance can affect your speech, mood, and coordination. If you really overdo it, you might completely lose your memory.

CBD or cannabidiol is a cannabinoid extracted from the hemp plant. You shouldn't mistake this plant with marijuana that causes psychoactive effects. These substances are extracted from different species of the cannabis plant, and they provide different benefits and side effects. Nowadays, you can buy various medicinal hemp products such as CBD hemp oil, CBD capsules, CBD cream, and even CBD infused beer.

Experts believe that CBD, and other cannabinoids, work by stimulating endocannabinoid receptors, which are a part of the endocannabinoid system. The general theory is that the endocannabinoid system is able to regulate processes within the brain and body. For example, it might be important for mood, focus, sleep, regeneration, protection, reproduction, etc. Because of their potential impact on the endocannabinoid system, CBD products are often advertised as substances that can help with chronic pain and anxiety. Unfortunately, most governments are still tentative when it comes to medicinal hemp as a potential treatment for these issues.

It is really hard to say what kind of an impact a CBD infused cocktail would have. There aren't enough studies that explore potential interactions between CBD oil and alcohol. A lot of scientists believe that these two substances are able to balance each other. In some cases, cannabis products are mentioned as something that might help with a hangover or even alcohol withdrawal.

What do studies say about combing CBD oil and alcohol?

As already mentioned, there aren’t enough studies that would provide us with any conclusive evidence. One particular research has explored the possibility of mixing these two together. During this study, 6 men and 4 women were given a placebo, cannabidiol, alcohol, CBD, plus alcohol in a double-blind, crossover, randomized design. As you can presume, when given alcohol, as well as alcohol plus CBD, test subjects had impaired motoric issues. So, CBD didn't help to completely negate the symptoms of alcohol. One thing that stood out is that people who took CBD plus alcohol had significantly lower blood alcohol levels compared to those who only took alcohol. Based on that, we may presume that cannabidiol may help sober a person.

Of course, this is just one study, and it shouldn't be used as definitive evidence. In the future, we will need similar research, even if it's performed on animal subjects. However, the initial results are promising.

Is it safe to use CBD oil and alcohol?

Most people don’t realize this, but when you drink a lot of alcohol in a short period of time, your whole body will be affected in one way or another. Of course, your brain will suffer the most, but other organs and tissues will be affected as well. While CBD might help with some of the issues and even reduce the levels of alcohol in the blood, excessive alcohol intake will lead to serious, uncontrollable consequences.

On the other hand, CBD oil is regarded as a safe substance by the World Health Organization. It can be used with various wellness products and natural foods without showing any negative effects. Consumption of cannabidiol might lead to minor problems such as changes in blood pressure, appetite, drowsiness, dry mouth. However, none of these issues are concerning.

Based on what we know so far, using these substances simultaneously shouldn’t cause any issues. In fact, CBD might provide certain therapeutic benefits to people who are abusing alcohol or were affected by the substance in some other way. Nevertheless, we still suggest caution. Whether we’re talking about cannabidiol oil or alcohol, you should use them in moderation. If you have any additional questions, we suggest that you consult a medical professional.

CBD benefits for alcohol’s side effects

We’ve already mentioned that cannabidiol may help with certain issues caused by alcohol. The chemical has a strong protective function and is meant to harmonize internal processes. Here are some of the potential benefits you may experience:

May prevent cell damage

One of the most concerning related to excessive alcohol consumption is cell damage. People often focus on brain cell loss, but the substance affects other parts of the body as well. Over a prolonged period of time, you might experience various inflammations, cellular damage, liver issues, and even cancer.

While CBD cannot completely negate these issues, it might provide moderate cell protection. According to one specific study, the application of CBD gel was able to reduce brain cell damage by 50% in an animal model. Another research indicated that the substance might protect against fatty liver. Based on the data, the substance helped by stimulating cell regeneration and replacing affected tissue. Like with most other CBD related stuff, the biggest issue is the lack of data. While these studies are promising, we don't have enough information on how cannabidiol would work on humans.

Potential reduction in blood alcohol levels

As already mentioned, one of the main reasons why you should combine these two products is so that you can counter the effects of alcohol as soon as it's introduced into the body. High blood alcohol level are connected to the loss of motoric functions. We've already mentioned a study during which test subjects used a mixture of CBD and alcohol. And while the results were really promising, we have to consider the fact that this study was performed 50 years ago. The subjects were given very large quantities of cannabidiol (5 to 10 times than normal), which skewers the results. Nowadays, most people take smaller quantities of the chemical, which is why CBD might not provide the same results.

And while these findings may sound promising, other studies have provided conflicting results. During a different study, the same test was performed but with animal subjects. Of course, they were given a much smaller quantity of CBD and alcohol. According to data, rats' alcohol levels did not diminish. This might've happened because animals react differently to the combination of CBD and alcohol. However, the conflicting results are very troublesome, and we would need additional human tests with appropriate CBD dosage to discover if this mixture really works for lowering alcohol levels in the blood.

Can be used for an alcohol addiction

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms can be really nasty. They may include issues such as anxiety and delirium tremens. This is a very challenging period for all the addicts, and they need every help they can get. Luckily, CBD might provide assistance with some of these issues.

According to limited data, the substance may help prevent relapse. This itself would be good enough to warrant its use. But, to make things even better, medicinal hemp may also improve motivation and reduce alcohol intake. It seems that cannabidiol works for alcohol as it does for some other vices. For example, a specific study researched the simultaneous use of cigarettes and CBD. According to it, smokers reduced their consumption by 40% during this period of time.

Based on that, CBD might provide assistance not only for alcoholics but also smokers, drug addicts, and other less fortunate individuals.
